Who we are
Open Bottle was founded by Tom and Maria, a married couple from southeast London who are both passionate about wine and food!
We are a wine consultation and education team with the goal of making wine more approachable. We help wine enthusiasts of all knowledge levels feel confident in choosing something new.
The world of wine can seem daunting and elitist, but wine should be fun!

About Tom
Tom is a chartered accountant who fell in love with wine and changed career after a decade working in finance. He has studied wine (WSET Level 3 award in wine) and spent 18 months working at a local wine merchant, during which time he planned and hosted tasting events alongside his sales advisor role.
Tom's the brains behind the knowledge articles and usually the one with the wine list at a restaurant. He's passionate about wine education and demystifying wine.
What's your favourite wine?
This is a question I get asked a lot, and my answer is often (unhelpfully) that it depends on what I'm eating!
If I had to choose, I'd pick something Italian - probably a Barolo as it's both elegant and rich, with a earthy mushroom character that I absolutely love in a wine.
About Maria
Maria is also a chartered accountant and has spent her career presenting complicated information in an easy to understand way. She is now using that expertise in Open Bottle’s marketing and social media communications!
To pursue her passion for wine, Maria completed WSET Level 2 award in wine. She is also a keen chef and has studied food writing with Le Cordon Bleu. Maria is usually the one planning the food element of our pairings!
What's your favourite wine?
Whatever is in my glass! I am particularly fond of anything from Central Otago in New Zealand (where we spent our honeymoon!) but can also never turn down a Côtes du Rhône.
